I start off by explaining what CAS is and by collaborating with families regarding goals and what words they would like to see mastered. I explain that therapy is also going to focus on functional communication, that is combining use of gestures, signs, and/or additional AAC in order to decrease frustration and ensure communication of wants/needs. Therapy will typically consist of 5-10 target words, usually targeting a specific syllable structure such as vowel-consonant (such as 'up') and consonant-vowel-consonant structures (such as boat). I explain the importance of being able to imitate and talk through the various cues as they are provided. My ultimate goal is to help your child successfully communicate across settings and decreasing frustration with communication while also increasing their speech intelligibility.
I have parents remain in the treatment room for the duration of the therapy session. I will ask how things are going at home and/or school, including what is going well and what is challenging. I discuss the types of words that are going to be targeted during the session and explain cues as they are provided. I provide home programming by practice words, worksheets, and/or activities to begin targeting generalization of skills learned in therapy, keeping in mind what is suitable and appropriate for your child.
I use a combination of signs, acknowledging and respecting gestures, introduction of vocabulary and/or core vocabulary boards and trialing of high-tech programs using our clinic's iPad to provide means of alternative communication without sacrificing being unable to communicate basic wants/needs. I also have contacts with Tobii Dynavox to trial dedicated devices, when necessary. I use all means of communication during sessions while simultaneously targeting specific words and phrases to build accuracy of the motor movements.
