I specialize in the evaluation and treatment of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) and other pediatric speech sound disorders. I graduated from the Apraxia Kids Intensive Training Program ("Bootcamp") and am "Recognized by Apraxia Kids for Advanced Training and Experience in CAS." I have also completed the Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) advanced course. I use evidence-based practice (EBP) techniques which incorporate the Principles of Motor Learning (PMLs), such as DTTC, Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment (ReST), and Speech Motor Chaining, when treating children with CAS. I am also trained in PROMPT and The Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol. Goals focus on improving movement gestures across words/sequences through the use of functional targets. Therapy sessions consist of structured practice, with a high number of practice trials. a variety of visual and tactile cues, as appropriate for each individual child, are used. Engaging reinforcement activities are tailored to meet each child's needs and interests and make therapy sessions fun!
Treatment goals are developed following thorough assessment and with parent input. Parents are welcome to remain in the therapy room with their child. Progress is discussed and reviewed following each session. Therapy techniques and rationale are explained, and home practice ideas/activities provided. Parents are encouraged to ask questions, discuss concerns, and give ideas for specific targets that are relevant to the child's current interests and activities.
The use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication can be a powerful tool to support communication in children with CAS who are working on developing their speech and language skills. I have experience with both low-tech (e.g., communication books) and high-tech (e.g., voice output devices) AAC.
