I use evidence-based practice (EBP) techniques such as Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC), Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment (REST) and Speech Motor Chaining, which incorporate the Principles of Motor Learning (PMLs). I am also trained in PROMPT and The Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol. I utilize sign language as well as additional visual and tactile cues in all therapy sessions. Goals focus on the development of speech and language skills and practice is on functional targets. Therapy sessions consist of structured and play based activities tailored to meet each child’s needs and interests with the goal of a high number of practice trials while still having fun!
Treatment goals are developed following thorough assessment and with parent input. Parents are welcome to remain in the therapy room with their child. Progress is discussed and reviewed following each session. Therapy techniques and rationale are explained, and home practice ideas/activities provided. Parents are encouraged to ask questions, discuss concerns, and give ideas for specific targets that are relevant to the child's current interests and activities.
The use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication can be a powerful tool to support communication in children with CAS who are working on developing their speech and language skills. I have experience with both low-tech (e.g., communication books) and high-tech (e.g., voice output devices) AAC.
