Recommended therapy frequency and duration varies depending on client severity and prognosis, however literature supports shorter frequent sessions, that focus on improving the motor planning and programming for speech production by targeting movement patterns for speech that are specific to the clients needs and current skills. Treatment requires client to posses imitation skills in order to participate in formal CAS treatment. My treatment approach prioritizes family and client input for functional words to be targeted directly in treatment sessions.
Parents and caregivers are an integral part of the therapy process. Treatment for CAS is specific to targeting the planning and programming for speech, which is very structured and requires specific cueing and modeling for acquiring accuracy of movement. Due to this, it is very important that clients and families are not incorporating "negative practice" of speech movement at home. It is my goal to provide families with the education they need to feel confident to identify when negative practice is happening, and when appropriate, provide education and training within therapy sessions to teach families/caregivers to use strategies and cueing used in sessions to practice targets at home. Families are also provided with targets that are ready for regular generalization of skills, meaning the child is ready to practice across all environments with all communication partners.
Based on specific child and family needs, I have implemented low tech AAC such as PECS or other visual picture system, as well as a variety of high tech AAC including snap core, LAMP, Proloquo, and touch chat communication programs. These are often implemented in coordination with high frequency speech production sessions in order to provide a functional means of communication for the client.
