At Swanson Speech Therapy, we strive to embed play and interests of the child into all of our therapy, including therapy for a child with CAS. With that in mind, we include principles of motor learning into all of our CAS sessions and often utilize Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing, power/core words and phrases that are functional to the specific child and their family unit we are working with as well as explore all avenues of communication to help maximize our client's communication with others and what is important to them.
Parents typically sit in on therapy sessions, and are an integral part of the team when it comes to creating and updating treatment plans (choosing power/core words and phrases to target, discussing what goals are most functional and high priority for the child and the family). Parents are often asked to participate in home practice and give feedback each session on what is challenging and what is going well during home practice and communication at home overall.
We often use AAC as a support for total communication for the child. This can look different for each child and family. The most important component is that we are working together as a team to provide access to increased expressive communication utilizing AAC in tandem with speech therapy targeting speech sound production.
