Therapy for children with CAS begins with building a relationship of trust. Knowing what you want to say but being unable to say it can be very frustrating for some kids with CAS, understandably! Once a child sees that with the right kind of support they can succeed, they are much more willing to attempt harder targets. After the child trusts me, my focus is on helping them improve their motor planning/programming processes so that they can express themselves with ease. I will select "target words" that help your child learn a variety of motor sequences and we will practice these words using motor speech principles. As they progress, I will increase the complexity of target words and help with generalization into other settings. I often work with other providers to ensure the child is supported in all their environments.
Parents are crucial for success in apraxia therapy! You are the expert on what your child likes, dislikes, and how they communicate in other settings I don't see them in. As I evaluate your child and create target words to work on, you will help me determine whether targets are functional. In addition, as they progress through therapy, you will be provided with resources and ways to practice targets outside of the therapy room.
I have used high tech AAC with students to supplement their communication while working on verbal speech. This helps to decrease frustration while we target verbal speech, and I've had students who enjoy imitating the speech on their AAC which helps with practice! The ultimate goal is communication so I want each child to have multiple means to communicate if needed.
