I currently provide private speech therapy with children in their homes and school settings. I believe children learn best and work hard on improving their communication skills when they are motivated and having fun! I try to find hands-on, engaging toys that a child loves and use them to maximize their speech skills through practice. When I am working in a home, I involve the parents and make them part of my therapy sessions. I explain what skills we are working on and how best to cue for each child's success. If I am seeing a child at school or daycare, I send a written note home so parents and teachers are able to see what we are working on during therapy. I am in frequent communication with parents and often share photos or videos to help parents understand how to carryover what we are working on during speech sessions.
I always include parents in my therapy sessions, because this is important to ensuring a child carries over the skills we are targeting. If I am in a home, the parents are part of the session and interact within the session. i reserve time at the end to talk to the parents and answer questions. If a child is being seen at school, I send notes home to document what we worked on during a therapy session. I frequently send home photos or videos of specific skills so the parent can "see" what we worked on as well.
I start with low-tech AAC options (picture cards, visual supports) paired with other cues (hand signals, mouth cues) to get a child's best approximations for sounds and syllable shapes. After gaining additional data, I consider high tech AAC options to support a child who is highly unintelligible and needs this type of support for functional communication.
