The effectiveness of therapy depends on the careful and precise selection of therapy targets and strategies. After a thorough evaluation, syllable shapes and phonemes can be selected for treatment. It is important to pair mastered syllable shapes with novel sounds and novel syllable shapes with mastered sounds. Treatment practices will differ when therapy is first initiated, versus further along in the treatment process to elicit carryover and generalization. Various research-based treatment methods may be implemented depending on what your child best responds to. Treatment methods may include, dynamic and temporal cueing, Kaufman treatment protocol, or Rapid Syllable Transition Training. Augmentative-Alternative Communication will be discussed as an option to supplement speech if needed, depending on severity.
It is very important for parents to be a part of the therapy process. When accuracy is achieved in the therapy room, carry-over activities will be taught to parents so they can be implemented at home. Parents can participate in treatment sessions to get hands on practice with the therapist present.
Low tech systems such as PECS and core boards have been implemented with our clients to supplement speech. Various high tech devices have also been implanted with our clients with larger vocabularies to supplement speech.
