When treating a child with CAS or suspected CAS, the focus of treatment is movement. In order to achieve this goal, I rely on the Principles of Motor Learning and apply them to the child at their level. Targets are carefully selected. Practice conditions are varied to achieve correct productions of those targets. For example, multisensory cues are given to produce those targets and then faded to help the child become independent. Feedback is also varied as therapy progresses.
Children learn and retain information best when they are having fun! Play facilitates a child’s cognitive, emotional, physical, and social development. Repetition is an important part of therapy, and all children are more engaged in practice when they are able to participate in preferred activities.
I love to have parents or caregivers attend therapy sessions! I value their observations and input during diagnosis and treatment. Quality of practice matters, and when parents are involved in their child’s therapy, they are able to give their child frequent quality opportunities to practice new skills because they are familiar with the methods the therapist uses to help their child be successful. If a parent is unable to attend their child’s session, I try to give them a brief review of how and what we worked on in therapy and/or a short video of their child during therapy so that they are able to help their child practice at home.
In my work with preschool age children, I have been an active part in AAC implementation. I have seen use of a dynamic AAC device help children with CAS repair communication breakdowns and build confidence in their ability to communicate with family, friends, teachers, and classmates. I encourage both low and high tech systems as ways to augment their communication as they work to improve their verbal speech.
