As a mom to a child with CAS and a professional with a passion for treating CAS, I strive to have both the parents and child walk away from a therapy session feeling empowered. I work hard to establish and maintain a repertoire with both the child I am working with and their parents/guardians. This is hard work and it truly takes a team with each of us being valuable members. We will use the therapy session to continue building upon the child's skill set through functional practice, depending on their individual needs, all while incorporating play/fun into our interventions.
Parents are invited to attend every treatment session. Early in the treatment process, we work together to establish a list of words that their child can say or approximate as well as generate a list of power words that have high meaning and are functional for their child. These words will be powerful and motivating for their child to say and will used as our primary targets. It is helpful for the parents to be involved because they are able to watch and learn what I am doing and the why behind it.
I have extensive experience using AAC both as a clinician and also a mom to my son with CAS who uses LAMP daily. It has been vital in my practice, to use AAC concurrently as we work on speech sound movements because it provides the child opportunities to communicate. It is another tool in their toolbox and often helps to lessen the frustration because they are able to communicate. With parents, I help them find ways to incorporate AAC into their everyday lives (opportunities at the dinner table, circle time, restaurant etc).
