All therapy provided for my clients is family based. Involvement of the family in therapy is critical for progress and generalization of skills to everyday life in school and community use. Parent education begins at diagnosis and continues throughout treatment. Therapy is completed in a partnership with the family for the best outcomes for the client. Childhood apraxia of speech is targeted in my practice on an individual basis, in an intensive model of 3-5 sessions weekly. Speech movement or the planning and programming of speech is targeted with a goal of 100% accuracy as judged by a rubric that determines mastery when the client is able to correctly produce a target spontaneously. Family members are welcome in sessions and/or will be provided with training and targets based on client performance.
A detailed case history and ongoing feedback about speech production from the family is critical for client success. Families will be welcome at all sessions as well as trained on strategies and provided targets to practice at home.
Augmentative means of communication is considered with each client to provide the family with a means for clarification of messages. Some devices used with this population are low tech pictures, software used with an iPad, computer use as word processing, and phones, specifically text features to support breakdowns in communication.
