While treating children with childhood apraxia of speech, my goal is to implement evidence-based practice in a way that is engaging and fun for each individual child. Dynamic assessment is utilized while ensuring target words are functional and meaningful. Treatment methods incorporating the principles of motor learning such as DTTC are implemented during treatment sessions that take place at least twice per week. An intensive model of therapy with increased dose frequency (4 sessions/week) is used when appropriate.
Parents are essential to a child’s progress and are involved every step of the way. They are integral to early selection of meaningful, functional targets, and they help facilitate each child’s personalized home exercise program for improved carryover of skills.
A multimodal communication approach is often implemented to promote language growth while also keeping a focus on speech intelligibility at the same time. Depending on the individual needs of the child, a combination of manual signs, low-tech communication boards, and/or speech-generating devices are utilized to provide each child with a means to communicate their wants, needs, and feelings.
