A child with CAS requires high trials of targets selected. Targets are selected based upon current repertoire, functionality, and from family input. Depending on the treatment strategy selected the format or hierarchy will be followed. Due to the nature of the high level of cueing provided from the SLP, homework is typically not assigned. CAS therapy relies on the child and SLP to work together in a highly motivating environment to reach a high level of trials in order to make changes to the motor planning of the targets.
Parents are an integral part of the treatment process. Consistent communication between parents and SLP is needed in order to facilitate an effective course of action. If AAC is an option, the parent is a crucial partner in selecting the most appropriate program to utilize. Parent feedback is highly encouraged as they are able to notice generalization in everyday routine activities or when the child is communicating with others outside of the home.
AAC is an important factor to consider when treating children with CAS. Communication is the top priority. A low tech option may be utilized for functional communication across his/her day in order to answer questions, comment, or make requests. This system may be adapted at a basic level or grow with the child. A higher more robust system may be necessary with children who display poor speech intelligibility. AAC is utilized in conjunction with verbal speech, however not a requirement. I have attended a variety of training courses in AAC assessment and implementation with numerous programs. Modeling is a very important part of the learning process with AAC. It is never used as a tool for compliance rather as a tool for communication without specific or drilled communication demands placed on the child.
