I will do my based to make speech therapy fun and motivating for your child while also following therapy practices that we know are effective based on research. Therapy sessions may look different for every child, but they will all have some things in common. We will work on your child’s speech goals using lots of practice and repetition. I will use a variety of cues to help your child be successful. These cues may be visual, verbal or tactile, and will change over time. I will also give very specific feedback to your child, and I will adjust the type and frequency of feedback over time. We will focus on a variety of movement sequences and also include work on prosody (rate, intonation, and stress) of speech. While we work hard to get in a high level of practice during each session, I will give your child breaks and rewards to help keep their motivation and participation high.
Parent support is the key to facilitating progress and carryover. We will partner together to involve you in supporting your child at home. Home practice may look like modeling the correct production of targets or practicing assigned target words, phrases or sentences while providing specific cues and offering specific feedback. I’ll let you know how to best support your child and instruct you how to provide that support. You will also learn a lot by watching our therapy sessions.
Using AAC as part of a comprehensive therapy approach will support verbal speech and language development. Use of AAC will help increase the intelligibility of speech to ALL communication partners and promote overall communication effectiveness and language learning. I have used unaided AAC supports such as gestures and signs, low-tech AAC such as picture boards and higher tech AAC such as apps on phones and iPads as well as dedicated speech generating devices. We will work together to find the tools that utilize your child’s strengths and interests to best meet their communication needs.
