My treatment approach is very individualized according to each child’s strengths, needs, and family dynamics. General approaches include implementing low and/or high tech AAC systems in conjunction with verbal communication in an attempt to influence any means of appropriate communication for the child to obtain their wants and needs. I include tactile cueing systems (PROMPT) as needed along with Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) with varying types of practice and feedback schedules.
Parents play a large role in the assessment, diagnosis, and therapy processes. Parents are informants throughout the assessment period. Parents are observers and participants throughout the therapy sessions. Parents are asked to reinforce therapy activities outside of sessions for maintenance and generalization of skills.
AAC has been used to assist with facilitating a form of communication as verbal communication is developing. If used, it will always be in conjunction with verbal communication facilitation.
