Therapy always involves their interests and play. I try to incorporate lots of repetitions of targeted words in natural play that is motivating and meaningful for your child. We believe in using lots of multi sensory cueing like visual or touch cues and use lots of evidence based techniques so your child can blossom. I use my techniques in Kaufman, Prompt, DTTC to help tailor an individualized treatment plan for the child.
I work closely with parents and make sure they are involved every step of the way. I discuss any targeted words they would like me to work on and discuss any approximations. I have parents participate in therapy sessions and watch how I implement target selection and multi sensory cueing techniques. I discuss with/show them ways they can integrate this practice at home, school, and other daily routines in a natural, play based way. I always talk over the why behind the strategies we do, as well, so parents feel empowered themselves. For parents that are not able to join our sessions, I send detailed homework and strategies to work at home and make myself available for any questions they may have as they implement this at home.
I have extensive experience with high-tech AAC devices, like LAMP and Proloquo2Go on the iPad. I also use low-tech tools like communication boards and sign language to support total communication. These strategies work alongside verbal, motor speech therapy, empowering kids to communicate in whatever way works best for them and what helps them get their wants/needs/desires met.
