I determine the child's strengths and weaknesses with speech sounds and target the sounds that are most stimulable and the most important to intelligibility. We practice the particular motor patterns that are difficult for the child starting with most-to-least prompting (Typically, I start with simultaneous production or direct imitation, depending if the child is able to produce the sound). We move to practicing words - then move to practicing fill in the blanks - then to short sentences. It is important that the child with CAS has lots of correct practice with these motor patterns and that they are highly successful. I incorporate games and motor activities during rote practice to ensure the child is having fun while learning.
I do therapy in home, so often parents are present for my sessions. If parents are not present during the session, I share my progress notes with them or give them a verbal/written update. Homework assignments are left for the family to ensure carryover and expedite progress.
For one child who is low-verbal, we use a core board. Many of my other clients are able to use speech enough to get their needs met and do not prefer to use AAC.
