My therapy for children with CAS may look different depending on the age of the child, but the underlying principles are the same. For example, I select specific, useful words to target in therapy and use a system of cueing and feedback with the child. For a toddler, those words we are targeting will be embedded into play activities in a way to achieve multiple opportunities for practice. For an older child, the practice words will be incorporated into age appropriate activities such as books and games, always focusing on multiple repetitions of targeted words to achieve consistency and independence.
Parents in our clinic are able to watch live therapy sessions via a computer monitor in a viewing room. After the session, debriefing is provided to the parent to talk about what was done in therapy and why. Target words that were successfully completed in therapy sessions are written down for parent to practice correct producing at home. Parents are provided education regarding what CAS is strategies to help their child at home.
Alternative or augmentative communication strategies are often used in therapy for children with CAS. These might be low-tech, such as using gestures or simple signs, or pictures to assist the child in communicating their message and thus decreasing their frustration. Children who have minimal speech may benefit from a higher tech form of AAC, such as an app on an iPad ; this allows the child access to a more robust vocabulary. I have used both low tech and high tech options in my practice, depending on the needs of the individual child.
