I use a motor based learning approach to treat childhood apraxia of speech known as DTTC (Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing). I start by taking an inventory of the sounds and syllable shapes that your child has to choose a small number of functional, everyday words to target. I always discuss goals with parents so that we can determine what words/phrases will be most helpful in your child's communication. During therapy, I use a variety of cues to help your child produce the target word accurately. Initially, I will initially produce words slowly and in unison with your child. Then, cues are systematically faded. I focus on movement-based cues rather than sound-based cues ('watch my mouth'). I will focus on getting a high number of repetitions of the targets each session. I will train you on how to work with your child at home as well since daily practice is vital.
Parents are an integral part of a child's success and need to be a part of the therapy process. When a child has mastered a new sound or word in a therapy session, I will work with the parents to ensure practice and carry-over at home. If a child is using sign language or a speech generating device in the therapy setting, I will work with parents and caregivers to ensure that they have knowledge and confidence in using these methods at home.
For the first 2 years of my career, I specialized in AAC. Therefore, I know the value of providing a child with multiple modalities of communication. I have used both high-tech systems (e.g. TD Snap Core, Proloquo2Go, WordPower, etc.) on iPad's or other dedicated devices, as well as low-tech systems, such as sign language and picture systems as needed. I look at a child's individual needs and skill set in order to determine an appropriate route if AAC is needed. If it is, I incorporate parent training into our sessions.
