When I treat clients with CAS, my goal is to help them become confident, empowered, and independent communicators. After completing a thorough evaluation, I partner with clients and families to create a treatment program unique to them. Goals, activities, duration, and frequency of sessions are adapted based on each client’s age and family’s preferences. I use evidence based approaches that help clients build successful motor plans, program those plans into speech movements, and independently produce intelligible words and phrases. The words and phrases we practice during therapy will be functional and meaningful to the child and family. We work hard to improve the independence, ease, and naturalness of speech while having FUN!
I am especially passionate about empowering both children and caregivers in our sessions because I know that engaging in therapy can be a challenging and vulnerable experience (with high pay offs!) for the whole family. Specifically, this looks like educating caregivers about apraxia, therapy, progress, resources, and support. I partner with caregivers from the initial evaluation onward, especially involving them in choosing therapy targets (meaningful and functional speech goals). I am intentional about explaining my approach and strategies to parents each session so that they can be knowledgeable and confident about intervention.
I believe that assisted communication, whether low or high-tech, should be supported from the onset of therapy. Because my goal is to improve the independence and confidence of little communicators, I want to make sure they have access to every empowering means of communication necessary. AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) is an invaluable tool for children with CAS as they learn to communicate effectively through speech.
