Therapy at Key 2 Speech LLC for a child with CAS focuses on speech movements to improve intelligibility and the rate and rhythm of speech. This is accomplished through individualized goals based on the speech therapist's expertise and client/caregiver input on functional words/phrases to be targeted. Rate and rhythm are addressed with external pacing methods and auditory models. Therapy incorporates novel reinforcers and works to improve your child's participation with peers and adults during social and academic communication opportunities.
During a therapy session, the speech therapist will strive for a large number of imitated trials and will provide support to facilitate correct productions/close approximations. Cues are faded as progress is made. However, if at any time the child is having difficulties with a production, more support is given by the speech pathologist to improve accuracy.
Parents/Caregivers are an important part of the therapy process. Londa relies on them to help determine speech targets that will be the most beneficial to the client and family such as providing names of family members or other important words/phrases that are used often in particular environments. Parents will also be able to provide valuable insight into the nature of their child's speech problem. Additionally, parents will learn cues that help the child with motor planning and are expected to complete home practice activities each day or as warranted. Key 2 Speech also relies on the parents/caregivers to be reliable in getting their child to sessions. Their participation can affect progress in a very positive way.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) can eliminate frustration for children with CAS as it eliminates the need for natural speech or writing. Overall, AAC provides a low and/or high tech way for children with CAS to have their voice heard immediately versus waiting for intelligibility to improve through therapy. Low tech AAC can be as easy as having the child point to/give a picture to a communication partner to indicate a want/need. High tech devices may consist of a speech generating device (SGD). The SGD uses symbols that the child touches to activate a phrase or one-word message that the communication partner can hear. Using multiple modes of communication benefits everyone, as well as children with CAS.
