Therapy typically involves games or structured play activities that are interesting and motivating to the child. Throughout the session, the child will practice their words with the therapist to improve their motor planning of speech sound production. The therapist will focus on the movement between speech sounds and will use cues to help elicit target words with appropriate clarity, prosody, and intonation. It is important to practice each word several times in treatment to improve muscle memory and coordination. The therapist will provide education to parents about progress made in the session and words that can be practiced at home throughout the week.
Parents are the expert when it comes to their child! They usually know what their child is trying to say and can be helpful in providing information about communication breakdowns, words that are especially difficult for their child to say, and things that are interesting or motivating to their child. Parents are also great about practicing words at home that have been targeted in speech therapy sessions to help with generalization of skills.
I use AAC in therapy with children who have CAS to help supplement verbal speech production and decrease frustration. AAC can be a helpful tool in giving children the ability to express their wants, needs, and ideas with others without having a communication breakdown. I use high-tech AAC and low-tech AAC in my sessions with children who have CAS.
