My treatment approach follows the DTTC protocol for selection of appropriate targets in a limited quantity which is appropriate for the skill level of the child. I incorporate techniques such as simultaneous production, tactile cues, blocked practice, specific feedback on movement gestures, imitated production, delayed imitation, random practice, and prosodic variation to encourage generalization
Parents are encouraged to watch all therapy sessions and are provided with cueing strategies and target sounds and words to continue to practice frequently at home.
For children with pure Apraxia of speech, I typically incorporate sign language into early treatment in order to build functional communication. For children with duel diagnoses including Autism Spectrum Disorder with limited ability to imitate any volitional movement, I frequently pursue high tech communication systems to allow them to build language and communication skills until verbal speech production and communicative intent emerges.
