Treatment is individualized to each patient, capitalizing on his/her strengths and interests, all while incorporating evidence-based strategies and the child's communication goals into each play-based treatment session. The principles of motor learning and multisensory cues are implemented while targeting functional, motivating, and meaningful communication targets specific to each child.
Parent participation in each session is strongly encouraged, with strategies for home-programming discussed during and after each session. I love when families provide me with ideas for functional, powerful, and meaningful words they want us to target as part of treatment.
I incorporate both light- and high-tech AAC with my patients to support their verbal communication while continuing to target motor sequencing for speech. I've assembled light-tech communication boards/booklets for families to use at home, and have also completed the evaluation/trial process for patients to receive high-tech speech generating devices as well.
