First, a child is evaluated using both standardized and nonstandardized methods. We gather information from the parents/guardians, the children, and information from testing to gain the largest picture of a child's strengths and needs with their speech skills. Based on the information gathered from the evaluation, we find which treatment approach would be best. This may be specific to DTTC, ReST, or a combination of multiple evidence-based strategies. We work hard to get multiple repetitions of targets during a session using a multisensory approach and then coordinate with families to continue the work at home. We need our families to work with us to promote the fastest growth and carry-over of skills. As a child progresses, and if a specific strategy is no longer appropriate, we will switch to a more appropriate evidence-based strategy. Parents/guardians are updated on progress and strategies used after every session.
Parents/guardians play a very important role in the evaluation process as well as the daily home practice. Parents are coached after each session and may even be involved in the therapy themselves in order to ensure understanding of strategies and speech targets to work on at home. Children make the largest gains when their family is incorporated and we know that without our parents/guardians, a big piece of speech therapy is missing.
Children with CAS are encouraged to use low and/or high tech alternative means of communication. We welcome the use of all types of communication and embed these strategies into treatment with speech sounds. For example, if a child has a favorite toy, tv show, or food item that they are using a word approximation for, we may target these personalized words in speech therapy while using a speech generating device to model alongside my own verbal model while integrating principles of motor learning for speech. Even if I am not well versed in a specific software program (high tech device), I seek to find answers and understand how to navigate the system. I work with therapists in my clinic that also stay up to date on various AAC software programs and we work together as a team to troubleshoot when needed.
