I follow the principles of motor learning and use a multi-sensory approach. I strive to develop functional goals for the child and include the family when developing goals to allow the child and family to experience success! Prosodic/melodic intonation is incorporated with slower pace of presentations to facilitate repeated practice of selected targets with meaningful feedback. Activities are selected based on the child’s interests to keep them actively engaged and having fun! Sessions are typically 30 minutes in length and 2-3 times per week with families being provided additional practice worksheets to use outside of sessions.
I have worked with families to develop core vocabularies to practice at home and focus being to encourage functional communication. Incorporating IPAD with Visual Scene Display to support communication in sessions and with family has been another method to support total communication and allow our learners to initiate communication and be active partners in communication exchanges.
Parents are invited to observe and are provided training and practice sheets to use at home. When appropriate, parents can be involved in the treatment session to assist with learning approaches and techniques to practice outside of sessions. Parents are also provided training if using an assistive device for communication or pairing signing to facilitate communication.
The first step is to discuss this with the parents and then move forward. I am fortunate to work with faculty at Penn State that specialize in AAC and can assist with evaluations and determining most appropriate AAC intervention for our clients.
To date I have used:
- signing
- low tech communication books and boards to encourage functional communication depending on severity of CAS
- IPAP with VSD to support speech and language opportunities
