I use carefully selected stimuli based on your child's evaluation results while incorporating functional words that will help your child communicate as soon as possible. My sessions are drill based to ensure that your child is receiving enough trials of a target word to create a real change in his or her motor system, this is based on the principles of motor learning. I make sure to have quick reinforcements ready to keep your child motivated during practice. I make sure that your child is having fun while keeping the focus on improving the efficiency of their motor movements.
If the child is new to therapy, I provide an explanation of what CAS is and I demonstrate the treatment approach that I will use. I typically do this in person to ensure understanding. I complete various sessions with the parent to demonstrate the basics of apraxia therapy and contrast it with other therapy approaches. I send frequent videos home that demonstrate appropriate cueing so the child can continue practicing with success at home.
AAC is extremely important for children with CAS. The child must continue to learn language while we catch his or her motor system up enough to produce functional speech. I am a strong advocate for the use of AAC so the child can communicate now. I model language on their AAC device and work closely with the teachers and parents to ensure carryover.
