Therapy for a child with CAS can be expected to occur several times per week. Early in the therapy process the parent is encouraged to observe or participate so that they can be taught to assist their child with cues while practicing and speaking outside of the therapy session. For children with severe CAS an alternative and augmentative way of communicating may also be taught. The child may be taught to use signs and gestures or to point to pictures to make requests for preferred toys, object, and activities. Parents will be taught to work with their child at home in a way that is fun and motivating.
Parents are involved in the development of their child's treatment plan. They help set goals for treatment and provide a core vocabulary that they believe is important for their child to learn. Parents are expected to observe and participate in therapy sessions so that they can learn to provide cues and feedback while their child practices and speaks outside of the therapy session. Parents will also learn to engage their child in fun practice activities to keep him/her motivated.
Very young children are initially taught to use low tech AAC such as signs or gestures so that immediate needs can be met. The child is also taught to use pictures as a mean of requesting desired objects, actions and activities. Parents are taught how to use pictures in the home based on their child's particular vocabulary requirements. When appropriate the parent is referred to a local outpatient program for an AAC evaluation so that the correct high tech device can be considered. That device is then incorporated into the treatment plan. The child and family will learn to use the device at home, while out in the community and during school. A collaborative effort between therapist, family, and school is required for success.
