My approach starts with building a relationship of trust with the child and families. We are typically working together for a decent period of time, so that means that the child needs to know I am listening to them and supporting them in their journey from day one. Speech for children with CAS is hard work and I try my best to acknowledge them for the efforts they are putting into our sessions. I like to also acknowledge the families’ efforts and dedication to the children’s needs. For younger children, our therapy is play-based and I try to find activities, books and motivating toys to coincide with target words we are working on. As the child’s confidence in using their words grows, we will focus on high repetitions of target words. I rely on parent input for words or phrases that are functional and important to their family so that we are spending our time and energy on words that matter. I strive to make our sessions fun and feel less like the hard work we know it can be. In addition, parents are present and participate in each session, so they can help support their child in the session and reinforce therapy activities at home when appropriate.
Parents/Caregivers are a valuable part of their child’s sessions. It is important to me to create a strong professional-caregiver relationship so that we are working together as a team towards their child’s success. It is incredibly beneficial for families to see first-hand the strategies used in treatment, their child’s response to that treatment, and words and cues/strategies that will be useful at home. In addition, having a parent/caregiver in each session allows ample opportunity for education about CAS, discussion of how to advocate for your child, and to provide updates on what is going well and what has been a struggle in daily life so that we can personalize our therapy sessions for everyone’s success (child and family). Families are expected to complete therapy carryover activities at home whenever appropriate.
I have experience with using a variety of types of AAC throughout the years. For low-tech AAC options, I have worked with families to create basic picture communication boards and introduced baby/simple sign language. For high-tech AAC options, I have experience working with LAMP Words for Life system, TD Snap, TD Snap Scene, and CoughDrop app. It is important for a child with CAS to have an additional means of communication before and while speech production is emerging.
