My treatment approach depends on the needs and age of the child. I work hard to find motivating, functional activities for each child. I have completed training in Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) and the K-SLP Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol. I am also PROMPT trained. No single approach is best for every child so I work hard to find what works best for each child.
Parents are present during therapy sessions. Specific target words/functional phrases are assigned for homework. Since parents are present I teach them the appropriate cueing techniques that I have determined to be helpful with their child. I allow time for the parent to practice with the child with my coaching.
As stated above I have experience using high-tech AAC with children with apraxia including the PRC LAMP software, proloquo2go, GoTalkNow all for the iPad. I also have experience using the PRC accent series devices. I have used sign with children with apraxia as well as low-tech AAC including PECS. I believe AAC should be incorporated early in a child's treatment to increase the functionality of their communication. I have worked to receive grants for iPads for children with apraxia.
