When I work with children with CAS, my therapy focuses on using principles of motor learning using multimodal approach with a variety of cues, such as visual (e.g. look at my mouth), verbal (e.g. talking about location of articulators), tactile (e.g. touch cues to help guide placement), and gestural (e.g. hand cues associated with movements) cues to support the child with accuracy of the movement gestures needed to produce their target words. Treatment words are carefully selected based on each child's abilities and stimulatibility, keeping in mind functionality and motivation to say the words. I focus on words that will be highly meaningful the the child and their family. Sessions will include mass practice with target words in a randomized order and cueing level with increase or fade based on the child's level of success.
I believe a child's family is key to their success, and I work with caregivers to be part of their child's growth. Parents are part of the target selection process, providing insight into what is motivating to their child. I work with parents throughout treatment to learn how to use cues and supports in the home to help their child be successful and carry over target words into the home environment. I often provide handouts to parents to help them remember target words and cueing strategies.
AAC is an excellent way to support a child with quick access to language while working on their motor movements. I have worked with families to use a variety of AAC options ranging from picture communication to speech generating devices.
