I like to provide individualized therapy based on my client's needs and work with the family to determine what is the top priority for their child. For younger children with suspected CAS or diagnosed CAS I like to work on expanding basic communication skills while still working to promote motor learning for clear production of highly rewarding words. This is often done in a combination of play and more structured therapy work dependent on the child's ability to attend to structured activities and their current developmental level. For older children with CAS I tend to do highly structured therapy sessions to maximize our time together and then work to provide targets to practice at home when the child is ready to work on carry-over outside of the therapy session.
I like to have parents help determine therapy targets for their child to make sure that targets are the most beneficial for overall communication and interaction within their family. I like to have parents observe therapy sessions when the child is still able to fully participate within the session and if parents are not able to observe I will discuss the session with parents at the end of every therapy session. Once I feel that a child is demonstrating success with a therapy target with minimal therapeutic support I work with the family to start to work on that target within the home environment to help with carry over outside of the therapy room.
I like to start with low tech AAC such as pictures to help support verbal communication that is being targeted in therapy sessions to help with increased communication in the home or school. I have utilized high tech AAC such as LAMP WFL on an iPad within therapy sessions to once again model and expand on verbal targets being targeted.
