My approach to speech therapy in general is very relationship-based and child-led. This way the child feels safe and happy in the therapy room which promotes the best learning environment for them. Specifically for childhood apraxia of speech, I like to get the child interested in attending to my face and specifically my mouth early on through play and games so that it becomes a preferred activity to participate in these imitations or motor movements with me. Also, child-led therapy allows the child to focus on their interests and allows my to select targets that are motivating and functional for each child. Every child is different and I will alter my therapy based on what is working for each child, but I specifically like to start with Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) as I have has great success with this. It allows for more errorless, repetitive learning for the child, that increases difficulty by decreasing prompting without any stark jumps that leave the child feeling like they can't do it.
For a lot of parents, CAS is a completely new diagnosis so it is important that the SLP can clearly explain what it is and how we are going to work on it in our speech sessions. I try to break it down piece by piece, goal by goal, so that we are always on the same page. I love parents to sit in on sessions and be active participants in the games/activities so that their child sees their parents doing the same things that they are doing. I like to provide functional activities after every session that they can take home and practice.
I have an AAC device present in my sessions to supplement language and speech. I will use it so the child doesn't feel like it is a negative thing to use or talk with.
