Therapy for a child with CAS includes the child's interests, a highly structured environment, and a lot of practice with meaningful and functional words within the child's environment. It is also important to collaborate with the child's school to provide strategies and suggestions for effective communication at school and with peers. Other forms of communication (AAC) can also be explored if necessary.
Parents are key partners in the therapy process. Oftentimes they will be in the therapy room observing and helping the child to be comfortable. Parents are the source of important words that might be targeted during therapy. Also, education about CAS is an important piece of the therapy journey.
Sometimes, a communication device might be appropriate for a child with severe CAS. High tech communication devices provide a robust vocabulary that a child can use to more effectively communicate his/her wants, needs, feelings, and comments. Pictures or other iPad/phone applications are also often helpful with specific words that are important across different environments.
