Treatment for CAS focuses on the “movement” of speech vs. production of speech sounds in isolation. This means that children are learning to feel the way their articulators (tongue, teeth, jaw) move, to achieve accurate and smooth speech. After assessment, therapy will begin by implementing specific goals to improve how your child plans and sequences, simple to complex, movements required for speech. Treatment is carried out by face-to-face interaction, involving multi-sensory input, to the degree it’s necessary to facilitate accurate speech production. Family support and engagement is always encouraged, as is weighs into the success of therapy and carryover of speech, into the natural environment.
Parents are involved in many ways throughout the therapy process. Parents are encouraged to observe during sessions and eventually participate, through a guided process. This helps to ensure accurate and functional practice at home. Parents also contribute to therapy by providing valuable feedback that helps to determine the next steps in the treatment of CAS.
I have used naturalistic gestures/signs to low tech picture communication systems, to help alleviate frustration and discouragement in communication. These systems are used while simultaneously addressing motor speech needs in direct therapy. AAC systems are selected based on the individual needs of the child and the circumstances or preferences of the family.
