Holistic, eclectic, multi-sensory, child-centered, evidence-based. Using a "power phrase" & functional speech approach with highly motivating targets chosen with caregiver input. Movement, movement, movement! I have a sensory gym and work with equine movement to provide children the principles of moving their bodies and moving their mouths. I set the bar "high" and soar for the stars, helping children find their voice and learn how to create movement gestures necessary to speak their minds. I help children learn how to take "speech risks" and work with the use of varying levels of cueing (simultaneous/in unison, visual, tactile, gestural, motor) for mass practice of correct productions. Moving towards perfect practice and LOTS of it. My sessions are hard for kids but they do the work and they make the gains. I use Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC), PROMPT, ReST, Speech Chaining, successive approximations, oral motor programming, tactile/multi-sensory approaches and AAC to help children move up from single sounds, to syllables to words to phrases as soon as possible. I provide intensive treatment sessions helping children get a "jump start" on their progress and understand motor learning. I incorporate the principles of motor learning in all my sessions but also embed traditional language therapy into all sessions that incorporates play and fun. I use the principles of Sensory Integration and Mindfulness in my sessions. I use the Social Thinking Curriculum, concepts and framework to teach social pragmatics skills. I do individual and group therapy and provide sessions in clinic, home and community settings. I work a flexible schedule including weekends to help families with scheduling and increase my availability.
Caregivers are an integral part of the therapy process and are involved at all levels of therapy through observation, direct training, video modeling, vocabulary targets, behavioral modification, observation and participation. I have very strong working relationships with parents/caregivers I serve and always provide them with support from how to manage stress in the home, providing visual and sensory supports for their children, collaboration with other professionals, teaching modeling strategies & helping with homework, setting them up with other services in the community. Over 50% of my families speak Spanish and I provide services in both Spanish & English. Parent education is crucial to helping them understand their child's motor system and the principles of therapy that are necessary to promote success beyond the therapy clinic by incorporating these goals into everyday routines (in the car, dinner time, home play). I communicate after every session with detailed feedback about what the children are working on.
I use the Pragmatic Organization Dynamic Display (PODD) communication system with all children who start therapy. PODDs provide needed visual supports for children to communicate via pointing. PODDs contain a large amount of content vocabulary across many different areas to help children communicate their ideas. My clinic is full of visual icons for everyone to be able to point to for requesting, commenting, rejecting, socializing and regulating. I use visual schedules for all sessions and when needed send home aided language boards for communication that include functional phrases. I work closely with various device reps for speech generating devices and do AAC evaluations. I collaborate with AAC specialists for programming of devices. I provide parent training and modeling on using AAC in every-day settings and to support oral speech development.
