We always perform a comprehensive evaluation including pertinent background history. We include the parents within our evaluation process and perform the evaluation in the child' natural environment, preferably in the home. Our evaluation will examine all areas of language, oral motor, feeding when applicable and sound production assessments. Our assessment does not stop at the evaluation, as your child develops and grows, we continue to evaluate in our treatment to monitor skills development and assessment treatment responses. With a child with CAS, we may need treatment information to conclude on a diagnosis of CAS. Often times we will complete the initial evaluation and begin treatment with a suspected CAS diagnosis. When therapy is initiated, parent involvement continues with education and feedback regarding therapy and supportive techniques and strategies are trained to be delivered in the home to help overall communication. Therapy with CAS is essential to support motor programming. We will use touch, verbal, auditory and visual modes to help support motor coordination to promote the production of speech. Treatment consists of training with the multiple repetitions with supports to allow for positive approximations for maximum progress ad motor learning. We focus on movement and imitation. This may be movements of the body or gestures and follow the child's lead to target the most meaningful words for your child but using the most stimulable productions given their response int therapy. We use lots of praise and play to promote the very best motivation for communication.
Parents are involved from the first interaction with me as their SLP, prior to the evaluation, we speak about the assessment and therapy process and begin supporting caregiver involvement from the moment we start. I invite parents to attend evaluation and treatment as best they can and provide updates consistently throughout therapy. Expanding on motor planning with education on Apraxia so they can understand the process and appreciate the progress that their child is making. Strategies used at home are strategically taught once proven to be a benefit and independent in therapy.
I complete low and high tech AAC evaluations. This includes simple picture boards to voice output devices and eye gaze systems. I am familiar with several vendors and work diligently to determine the best AAC device while trialing in treatment. Treatment consists of continues program support to meet the child's cognitive-linguistic needs with appropriate vocabulary input into device.
