My treatment approach is holistic, eclectic, multi-sensory, child-centered and evidence-based. I have a functional communication approach with highly motivating speech targets ("power words & phrases") carefully chosen after a thorough evaluation to help take each child to the next level.
Movement, movement, movement! I have extensive training in sensory integration principles and address the whole child’s praxis system (dyspraxia and apraxia of speech). I work closely with occupational therapy and use a transdisciplinary treatment model infusing my speech therapy sessions with OT principles and goals and vice versa addressing the needs of the “whole child”. I have a sensory-motor gym with suspended equipment in one clinic and use equine movement/hippotherapy (yes, HORSES!!) at another clinic. I use a dynamic systems approach that through movement promotes postural, visual, vestibular and proprioceptive functions to help integrate the body the development of gross and fine motor skills. Children learn to improve activities of daily living and speech production at the same time.
I use a variety of evidence-based treatment approaches including Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC), PROMPT, ReST, Speech Chaining, Nuffield Dyspraxia Programme, successive approximations, oral motor programming, tactile/multi-sensory approaches and AAC to help children move from single sounds, to syllables to words to phrases and to connected speech. I set the bar "high" and soar for the stars, helping children find their voice.
I provide intensive treatment blocks to provide clients a “jump start" and understand motor learning. Therapy sessions are infused with multiple opportunities for naturalistic language learning that incorporates play and child-driven fun. I use the principles of Sensory Integration and Mindfulness in my sessions while helping children understand self-regulation and emotions supporting their mental health needs. Sessions are embedded with elements of the Social Thinking Curriculum concepts and framework to teach social pragmatics skills. When children are ready they participate in group therapy through weekly sessions and intensive therapy sessions (3 hour blocks) in clinic and community settings. Each year, children participate in a comprehensive summer camp program at a horse farm and participate in Speech at the Beach through SeaHorse Summer Camp.
With a background in early childhood education, I infuse therapy sessions with foundation skills of thinking, doing, saying and learning. Treatment sessions are designed to teach fundamentals through motivating activities (play, literacy, games, art, music, dancing, movement) while also providing the needed structure for speech production improvement (ex. speech drill, speech practice, repetition and mass practice). Children learn to take "speech risks", think for themselves, plan & organize their session and problem solve. I use the principles of motor learning in every session and use varying levels of cueing (simultaneous/in unison, visual, tactile, gestural, motor) in practice. Feedback on performance and results is provided consistently to teach accuracy and accountability in therapy. Children are challenged every session to go outside of their comfort zone yet remain in the Zone of Proximal development where lasting change occurs.
Flexible scheduling options are available for weekly therapy and intensive therapy blocks, carefully tailoring schedules to meet each family’s specific needs including. weekends.
Caregivers are an integral part of the therapy process and are involved at all levels of therapy through observation, direct training, video modeling, target selection, behavioral interventions and participation. Parents and I are a team and develop strong working relationships providing them with various levels of support across many areas including home generalization, managing stress, sensory and behavioral supports and collaboration with other professionals in school and community. Teaching parents modeling strategies & helping with homework, setting them up with other services in the community and providing an Apraxia community in my clinics. Over 50% of my families speak Spanish or French and I provide services in Spanish, French and English. Parent education is crucial to helping them understand their child's motor system and the principles of therapy that are necessary to promote success beyond the therapy clinic by incorporating these goals into everyday routines (in the car, dinner time, home play). I communicate after every session with detailed feedback about what the children are working on and what will be addressed in future sessions.
