Therapy for children with CAS can be fun while also structured. The structure comes from a thoughtful therapy plan and accurate diagnosis. I find joy in helping children with CAS begin using first words, and improve their ability to be understood by their family and peers. Therapy for CAS needs to be frequent and consistent and it is important to include parents in the therapy process so they can learn how to best help their children at home.
Parents are invited to observe therapy sessions, if that works well for the child. At the end of each therapy visit, I always spend about five minutes discussing the progress we have made but also giving ideas of how to help at home. This may be by giving them target words to rehearse, or it may be teaching the family which cues are most helpful for their child.
I have implemented simple communication boards for at home use for beginning talkers to help them communicate their basic wants and needs, and I have also recommended and trained clients to use high tech devices as needed. This varies based on the severity of CAS but I am comfortable and confident in exploring AAC options while contining to target verbal output.
