In therapy for a child with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), we focus on helping them improve their ability to plan and produce the movements needed for clear speech. This involves engaging, child-friendly activities that target specific sound combinations, words and phrases. Therapy is often structured around engaging games and repetitive practice to help the child develop better coordination and control of their speech mechanism. Sessions are designed to be supportive and encouraging, allowing the child to build confidence in their speaking abilities while making progress.
Parents play a crucial role in my therapy process for Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). First, I involve parents by providing education about CAS and explaining the therapy goals and methods. During sessions, I encourage parents to observe and sometimes participate in activities, so they understand the techniques we use. I also offer training on how to practice these techniques at home, providing specific exercises and strategies that parents can incorporate into daily routines. Regular communication is key; I give parents feedback on their child’s progress and collaborate with them to adjust the therapy plan as needed. This partnership ensures consistency and reinforces the child’s learning outside of therapy sessions.
For children with CAS I have implemented AAC to establish communicative intent, joint attention, and to ensure that they are able to communicate their wants and needs while working towards improving the precision of their verbal speech. AAC can be a great tool to decrease frustration around communication for children who are struggling to communicate.
