In speech therapy for a child with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), I take a child-led approach, following their interests to keep sessions engaging and motivating. I prioritize connection and sensory regulation, recognizing that a calm, well-regulated child, who trusts their provider, is better able to focus and learn. I view the child holistically, considering their unique strengths, challenges, and overall well-being and development; meeting your child where they’re at is a consistent consideration. During sessions, I aim for a high number of practice trials to build the motor patterns needed for clear and accurate speech, providing different types of feedback to help the child improve accuracy and generalization. My goal is to create a highly supportive, fun, and effective environment where progress feels achievable for both the child and their family.
As a speech therapist with roots in early intervention, I deeply value the role parents play in the therapy process. You are your child’s first and most important teacher, so I prioritize parent coaching to empower you with the tools and strategies to support your child’s progress at home. During sessions, I often take videos to share with you, highlighting specific techniques or activities we’ve worked on together. These videos make it easier to carry over therapy strategies into your daily routines. I also take the time to listen to your goals, concerns, and feedback, adjusting therapy as needed to ensure it aligns with what’s most important for your family. My goal is to work as a team so your child can thrive in therapy and beyond.
I incorporate Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) in therapy for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) as part of a Total Communication Approach. This means I encourage the use of multiple communication methods, such as (but not limited to): simple sign language, verbal speech models, and modeling on a high-tech AAC device or program, to support the child’s ability to express themselves effectively. The goal is to empower the child to explore and use the communication method that resonates most with them in any given moment, whether that’s signing, speaking, or using their device. By providing these tools, I aim to foster confidence and autonomy in their ability to communicate with the world around them, rather than limiting them to a single mode of expression.
