Determining a course of treatment and therapy tools for a child with CAS is always client specific and determined with the family as an integral part of the team. Often times when verbal output is limited, we initially work to decrease frustrations discussing both low tech and high tech AAC options. I use DTTC when appropriate, and also use the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP). The goal of therapy is always to meet the client at their current level, and use an approach that improves motor function with the maximum amount of trials and practice, while always being aware of the client’s comfort level with the process.
In all of my therapy, CAS specific or not, I rely on parents to be an integral part of the team. Parents truly know their children better than anyone- and I rely on them for help figuring out what motivates their child, what does not work for them, and what therapy targets are most functional and important to the family at the current time. Throughout the therapy process, I rely on parents to tell me how they think their child is feeling about the work, if I am able to push a little harder, or pull back to make the process work for them in that moment. We are constantly reassessing, and coming up with new ideas as a team. I support families as they move through the process of accessing school district supports and services as well, determining what supports parents feel will be most important to their child in a variety of environments and settings outside of the therapy room.
I provide students with functional language boards and static boards when necessary and appropriate. I have written letters of justification to insurance companies when families seek to acquire a dedicated speech generating device. I work with local device reps to run AAC trials and determine what app or software is most appropriate. I am comfortable with LAMP, TouchChat, and Dynavox. I assist families in device programming, and train them in how to use the device in conjunction with verbal communication.
