In my therapy approach I incorporate evidence-based treatment methodologies, multisensory cueing, and the child's preferences and interests to provide meaningful and impactful intervention. I am trained in DTTC and PROMPT. The principles of motor learning guide my intervention to set up the conditions that will allow for the establishment of motor movements to facilitate intelligible speech. Sessions are provided individually with an emphasis on eliciting a high number of correct trials using a variety of cueing. I prioritize the use of functional and useful targets in speech therapy to increase the child's ability to communicate in his/her own environment.
I believe that therapy needs to be immersive, facilitative, and inclusive of the family, this is why at my practice we provide a home/community based therapy model with a strong parent-coaching component. Individual therapy sessions are designed using child-centered, engaging, and motivating activities that take into account each child's sensory preferences and needs as well as the family's priorities. In collaboration with the parents, we will develop a set of functional targets to work on to increase the child's ability to communicate and be an active participant in his environment. Parents are highly encouraged to participate and learn the strategies/skills trained during sessions. I also provide family with resources and materials to learn more about apraxia.
When working with children with CAS or suspected CAS it is crucial to provide various modes of communication to decrease frustration and to allow the child to communicate in a functional way. I always advocate for the use of some form of AAC. I have worked with children that I have implemented the use of signs, pictures exchange, or and high tech ACC (speech generative device.) Within AAC, I provide aided language stimulation for the child during therapy as well as parent training to facilitate the use of the technique/device at home.
