I use evidenced-based treatment approaches, such as DTTC, aligned with the principles of motor learning to help children establish efficient and functional verbal communication. For children with CAS, I will derive a target word list that considers the child's phonetic inventory and reflects the movement gestures that are particularly challenging. In therapy, I will use a multisensory and hierarchical cueing protocol to train these words. By training targets in a such a specific way, we aim to improve the overall efficiency of the motor speech system.
It is critical for parents to be an active component of the therapy process. It is imperative that parents understand their child's target words and implement home practice. Research indicates that even just 1 hour of home practice can improve therapy outcomes for children with motor based speech disorders.
Speech and language are two entirely different domains. However, often deficits in motor planning confound expressive language output, as the motor system is not yet efficient enough to support the child's language. In order to continue to develop expressive language and allow for the child to functionally communicate, we can use AAC devices to bridge the gap. Using AAC devices to promote expressive language development and reduce patient frustration can allow for the child to functionally communicate their wants and needs, while you are targeting their speech sound development.
