I use a highly individualized approach to therapy for each of my clients. I understand the importance of multimodal therapy approach for CAS. Based on both formal and informal assessment, along with language samples and parent input I formulate goals that will be most meaningful for my clients life. The goal of my therapy is to increase intelligibility and promote generalization of these skills into my client’s everyday life. I am trained in PROMPT (PROMPTS for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets) and DTTC (Dynamic Temporal Tactile Cueing) and use both these therapeutic approaches in my therapy, along with visual and verbal modeling when appropriate. Ongoing assessment and parent input is also an integral part of my overall treatment approach.
Parent involvement is such an important part of my treatment approach and necessary to promote generalization of the skills worked on in therapy. Parents will be involved from assessment to treatment planning, and I always make sure parents feel comfortable practicing our target words/phrases between sessions. Parents are an integral part of the therapeutic team.
I have extensive experience implementing AAC into my therapy for children with CAS, both low tech and high tech. I have seen rapid progress for children that use AAC to support their speech output in terms of intelligibility and overall attitude when it comes to communicating. Being understood by both familiar and unfamiliar listeners is a powerful thing and sometimes children with CAS need some support while still working on intelligibility.
