Therapy is play-based and specifically designed around your child's unique needs and interests. Activities are constructed in order to motivate your child to say targets repetitively. Words and phrases taught are functional and help your child immediately increase engagement in their daily routines.
Therapy emphasizes the use of DTTC to target speech movements and syllable shapes, uses cues and prompts as needed, addresses prosody, provides appropriate feedback, and applies functionality to speech targets. I am a PROMPT-trained clinician and will incorporate these principles as needed.
I have an open-door policy, where parents are always invited to join for their child's speech therapy sessions. When caregivers are unavailable, I send short video clips of our sessions to demonstrate how I prompt the child in therapy and model how they can support their child at home. I provide regular phone calls and/or video calls to discuss the child's progress and provide recommendations. When choosing new targets, parents are always invited to suggest words and phrases. Caregiver collaboration is an integral part of the therapy process.
I have utilized various levels of AAC into my practice. AAC is an extraordinary tool to decrease frustration and increase communication. AACs are beneficial for a child to immediately request wants and needs, ask questions, and make appropriate comments to build relationships with family and friends. For children with CAS, I pair AAC devices with their target words and phrases to increase communication across the board.
