My treatment approach is hierarchical. I usually start with the early developmental sounds in combination with vowels, creating meaningful word approximations that are functional for the child's daily needs.
Parents attend every session, and are shown tactile prompts when appropriate. I explain the rationale for the hierarchical approach, and demonstrate activities that can be used to practice the words currently being taught. Pictures of the words are provided in the form of a speech book for home practice. Parents help by bringing in pictures of family members, favorite people, activities and toys that serve as a basis for the vocabulary selection.
I have not used AAC for children with CAS. If, after trial therapy, a child is remaining non-verbal, I would refer for an AAC evaluation.
