For a child with moderate to severe CAS, a small subtest of words/approximations will be chosen as beginning words to be targeted. This subset of words will make up the core vocabulary and will be chosen based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: how easily the word or approximation can be elicited, words that are meaningful to the child's life, and a mix of verbs and nouns. A combination of visual cues, verbal directives and tactile cues (touching around the child's face and mouth) will be used in order to facilitate productions.
Parents begin by observing all therapy sessions. Once a motor pattern is established in therapy, the parent or caregiver is taught specific techniques to elicit and support the child's production. This may mean learning how to use your hands to help shape or elicit verbal productions. In addition, I will work closely with the family to identify core vocabulary meaningful for the child, and outline opportunities within the child's everyday routines for the target words to be practiced
High tech AAC is frequently taught in tandem to provide an outlet for the child to communicate - to share their thoughts, ideas, and get their needs met.
