In speech therapy, my primary objective is to foster functional communication skills for each child. Therapy sessions are designed with a strong emphasis on individual interests, to make sure the child is engaged and motivated. The speech targets that are selected are based on both the child's abilities and areas of weakness, and functional words are chosen that are relevant to the child's everyday life. Guided by the principles of motor learning, therapy integrates visual, verbal, and tactile cues to facilitate learning and retention. These cues fade out as the child progresses in order to encourage independent productions. Sessions begin with a motor phoneme warm-up and mass practice is used throughout the session for skill reinforcement. I firmly believe in maintaining open and regular communication with both the child’s family and the therapeutic team, recognizing their vital role in the treatment journey. Sharing treatment targets with the family and team, and outlining strategies for carrying over these targets at home, forms an integral part of our comprehensive treatment plan.
Family involvement is critical in a child’s work to become a functional and intelligible communicator. Parents are invited to participate in home-based sessions, if it does not impact the child's ability to attend to treatment. For school-based sessions, I make sure there is frequent communication to let families know what is being worked on in the sessions.I provide activities to practice and reinforce what was targeted and help children generalize skills. Open and frequent communication also allows a family to share the child’s progress and concerns that can be addressed in treatment.
Using Augmentative and Alternative Communication is an important part of helping a child have their message understood while they are working on having their speech become more intelligible. The AAC that I use ranges from simple, low-technology visuals such as choice boards, visual sentence strips, communication books to more complex systems. In terms of technology, I have vast knowledge and experience programming and utilizing AAC devices and programs such as LAMP, TouchChat, Proloquo and GoTalk Now.
