I start where the child is, and build from there. I use multisensory cues and repetition to form the speech motor pathways. I strive to make it fun and tailored to each child's individual needs.
I explain things "on the go", so to speak, as we are playing and working on speech. I demonstrate techniques and describe suggestions for home carryover.
I work mostly with the birth-5 age range. My experience is more with low tech AAC. I discuss with parents the pros and cons of both sign language and picture based AAC systems. Together we may decide on one or try both to see if the child takes to one better than another. AAC can enhance overall communication and reduce frustration for the child and family.
