Initially when starting work with a child with CAS, I focus on building rapport. believe that a strong connection between the clinician and child will support engagement, motivation and the overall success of the intervention process. After establishing rapport, I seek to create a treatment plan that takes into consideration a child’s strengths, areas of growth and ability to produce a given target. My focus is on improving the movement gestures. The words used to improve movement gestures are based on functionality and relevance to the child and family. I incorporate principles of motor learning throughout treatment, as this has proven to promote learning, retention and generalization of a new motor plan. Throughout the treatment process, I seek to include family members and provide guidance for carrying over the work in sessions to home.
Throughout the therapy process, parents are encouraged to be active, hands-on participants. It is important for parents to also build their understanding of the treatment process in order to carry over work at home to best support their child. I also encourage parents to share their experiences at home, both what has been challenging for their child, where they are seeing success and what they think could be helpful movement gestures for their child to work on.
The use of AAC devices, signs and gestures can be very supportive of communication development. I incorporate each of these supports based on the needs of the child, as observed in the initial evaluation and as therapy progresses.
